Caminatas e insomnios

Survival, Reconstruction, and Commemoration

Caminatas e insomnios (Wandering and Sleeplessness) is a one-person play by Peruvian actor Lucho Ramírez. It was first performed as part of the inaugural London International Festival of Theatre in 1981. Ramírez was born and raised in the Andean town of Yungay, which, in 1970, was destroyed by a catastrophic landslide.

A decade later, Ramírez conceived of Caminatas e insomnios as a journey to his restless nights, haunted by fears of death and memories of displacement. This 2021 reproduction of Caminatas is a collaboration between Perú Fusión Teatro and the University of Leeds. It was filmed and produced by Beto Benites.

We arrive at a deeper understanding of history when we pay attention to the feelings and emotions that survivors share with us
