Macuto

Macuto is a seaside resort that gained popularity with the young and the wealthy in the 1920s. Although the landslides of 1999 caused significant material damage in the area, there were fewer fatalities in Macuto than in the neighbouring towns of Los Corales or Carmen de Uria.

These photographs, taken in 2016, show how some homes in Macuto were abandoned almost a decade after the disaster. The dried mud is almost like an artefact, or a material reminder, of the rains and the floods in that fateful December.
