Community Centre

Aberfan Community Centre was officially opened in 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by members of the Aberfan community who participated in a series of consultations as the village was being rebuilt after the disaster. They decided that the Community Centre should include a swimming pool, a sports hall, and a cafe. The centre was built using the donations that poured in to the Aberfan Disaster Fund from people around the world. Today it is run by the Wellbeing Merthyr Trust.

In October 2023, Moving Mountains ran a series of school workshops in Aberfan. These brought together one of the disaster survivors with the youngest members of the community, who showed us around the village. The students told us how, today, they visit the Community Centre to use its library, for swimming lessons, and for birthday parties. At the end of our workshops, we were blessed by a beautiful rainbow over the Community Centre which symbolised the bittersweet feelings of the day.
