Scattered around the Armero site, there are gravestones and memorials. Some families of the deceased have attempted to locate the places where their homes once stood. Others have erected monuments at the site where they last saw their loved ones, or where they are known to have perished. As well as commemorating the dead, these markers and memorials act as landmarks for a town that was wiped from the map. They allow visitors to imagine its layout, its inhabitants and its characteristics. Few material artefacts from Armero exist in the present day. NGO Armando Armero has gathered testimonies from Armero survivors that recall the town as it once existed. This represents an effort to protect its historical memory from disappearing, too.
